How to Make Authentic Native Pasta: A Step-by-Step Nigerian Recipe /announcements/make-authentic-native-pasta-step-by-step/ Fri, 03 Jul 2026 16:30:56 +0000 /?p=379725 There are two kinds of people when they see a pack of Pasta. The first kind immediately thinks, ‘Pasta and stew’. The second kind looks at that same pack and thinks, “I need to make something different’. Thankfully, Nigerians have a special talent for taking everyday meals and giving them a delicious local upgrade. Trust that they did it with Pasta as well.

Somewhere along the line, someone decided that pasta deserved a proper Nigerian makeover, and native pasta became the answer. If you’re reading this article, we’re hoping you’re part of the second kind looking to make something different because we’re about to give you a guide with the result being A+ in enjoyment.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 1 pack Golden Penny Pasta
  • Palm oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • Fresh peppers (ata rodo and tatashe blend)
  • 1 cup smoked fish, shredded
  • Ponmo, dried fish
  • Crayfish
  • Seasoning cube
  • Salt to taste
  • Ugwu leaves
  • Water as needed

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Cook the Pasta

Bring a pot of water to a boil and add your Golden Penny Pasta. Cook according to the instructions on the pack until the pasta is al dente. Drain the pasta and set aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Native Sauce Base

Place another pot on medium heat and add your palm oil. Allow it to bleach slightly before adding the chopped onions. SautĂ© your onions for a few minutes until fragrant and then add your locust beans, blended peppers and stir well. Allow the pepper mixture to cook for about 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 3: Add Your Proteins

Add the smoked fish, pomo and crayfish to the sauce. Stir everything together and allow it to simmer for a few minutes. Add seasoning cube, and salt to taste. Stir thoroughly to ensure the flavors are evenly distributed throughout the sauce and simmer for another 3-5 minutes. By this time, your kitchen will already begin to smell amazing.

Step 4: Coat Properly

In the pot with your sauce, pour in your Golden Penny Pasta. Mix gently until every strand of pasta is properly coated and the flavours are hugging each other. Add ugwu leaves to give it that final local touch and stir. There you have it, the .

Step 5: Introduce the star of the day

Serve your Golden Penny native pasta hot with your choice of protein and serve with a cold drink. If you’re feeling extra, add fried plantains on the side because there’s no such thing as “too much enjoyment”.

Conclusion

If you take the last forkful of your native pasta and you’re not already planning when next you’ll make it, then something is wrong somewhere because even the naija feel, and the hot pepper kick with Golden Penny Pasta will have you craving another round.

So the next time you’re tempted to make your same old pasta recipe, try giving it a native twist using this with Golden Penny Pasta, check for more and chop life like never before.

We Went to the GRIT Premiere. African Reality TV Is Ready to Get Bigger /announcements/we-went-to-the-grit-premiere-african-reality-tv-is-ready-to-get-bigger/ Thu, 02 Jul 2026 19:08:34 +0000 /?p=379790 Someone announces the next big African reality TV show, and usually, you nod politely and move on. Then, you watch the first episode and think, ”
okay, wait.” That was the energy inside EbonyLife Place on Saturday night (June 27), where Faaji Productions premiered , its new Pan-African reality competition series, before its public YouTube debut on Friday, July 3, 2026.

The screening brought together filmmakers, media people, creators and entertainment insiders for the first public look at a show that is trying to build an entirely different lane and push African reality TV beyond familiar territory, closer to the cinematic spectacle audiences have come to expect from global streaming hits.

We saw the usual premiere-night uniform of glamorous urban takes on local outfits, people pretending they weren’t trying to be photographed, filmmakers hugging each other across the room, and enough “You look so good!” conversations to remind you this was still Lagos.

Before the lights dimmed, the vast screening room was filled to capacity and had settled into that particular Lagos premiere energy, equal parts networking event, reunion and group chat finally happening in real life.

GRIT’s ambition is important because, for years, African reality television has largely lived in one lane. We know the formula. One house, one host, lots of confessionals, social media discourse, voting and a winner at the end. It works. But it also leaves room for something else.

GRIT is betting that “something else” looks like adventure

So
 what exactly is GRIT?

At its simplest, GRIT is a reality competition series. But “competition” doesn’t quite capture all it’s trying to do.

The show follows contestants through increasingly demanding physical and psychological challenges designed to test resilience, creativity and decision-making as much as athletic ability. Contestants are also forced to navigate shifting relationships, unexpected twists and difficult social choices.

The premiere episode wastes little time establishing those stakes.

Ten contestants arrive at the GRIT Residence believing they understand the game ahead before an unexpected eleventh entrant changes the group’s chemistry. By the end of the episode, someone is already headed home, a reminder that this isn’t a slow burn.

Imagine if a survival competition, a strategy game and a reality show had a baby, then dropped it somewhere in Kenya.

Hosted by actor Ini Dima-Okojie and filmed in Kenya, the series swaps living-room arguments for sprawling Safari landscapes, combining physical and mental challenges with strategy, alliances and the kind of interpersonal dynamics that inevitably emerge whenever ambitious strangers are asked to compete under pressure.

GRIT throws contestants into physical and mental challenges where winning is about making decisions, reading people, surviving pressure and figuring out who you can trust before they decide you can’t be trusted.

The room knew something different was happening

If premieres are about setting expectations, this one seemed designed to communicate scale.

The guest list included Snapchat’s Janine Anthony, former TikTok Content Operations & Partnerships Lead for Sub-Saharan Africa Ekikere Udofia, actor Elozonam and Big Brother Africa director Gbenga Kayode, who also directs GRIT.

Their presence reflected something larger than a single show’s launch. Increasingly, African creators are building formats that can comfortably exist in the same conversations as the world’s biggest unscripted franchises.

That’s the lane Faaji Productions appears determined to occupy.

“GRIT is resilience”

For founder , the show’s title transcends branding.

“GRIT is resilience. It’s about pushing forward and achieving something despite the odds. That’s the spirit we’ve poured into this show. We’ve created something truly incredible, and I can’t wait for people to experience it.”

Oyinkansola Owoyemi (right) being interviewed by Jay On-Air

It’s a statement that feels especially timely.

Across African pop culture, audiences increasingly reward stories built around endurance, transformation and ordinary people attempting extraordinary things. Whether through documentaries, reality competitions or creator-led storytelling, viewers have shown they’re interested in people becoming different versions of themselves.

GRIT appears to lean directly into that instinct.

Nobody wants another copy-and-paste reality show

For years, African reality television has mostly meant a house, cameras in every corner and Twitter doing overtime. GRIT is betting audiences are ready for something else.

People are hungry for bigger worlds, better production and stories that don’t feel geographically limited. Filmed in Kenya with contestants from across the continent, the series feels less interested in recreating familiar formats than in asking what a distinctly Pan-African competition show could look like.

The internet gets its turn on July 3

Private premieres are, by design, exclusive. The real audience is everyone who wasn’t in the room.

Beginning on Friday, July 3, 2026, GRIT premieres publicly on , where new episodes will be released regularly for viewers everywhere.

That’s when the conversation shifts from industry insiders to the internet, where every alliance, betrayal, elimination and plot twist will ultimately determine whether GRIT becomes another reality show or the beginning of a new chapter for African unscripted television.

Because in the end, every reality show makes the promise that you can “watch these strangers become unforgettable.” The interesting test is whether GRIT can make good television that makes the rest of us care enough to keep coming back next week.

VISA Outlines AI, Token, and Stablecoin Capabilities Shaping the Future of Commerce /announcements/visa-outlines-ai-token-and-stablecoin-capabilities-shaping-the-future/ Wed, 01 Jul 2026 14:27:19 +0000 /?p=379699
  • In CEMEA, Visa has seen growth in tokenised transactions from 26% in 2023 to 70% in 2026
  • Since the launch of stablecoins’ settlement capabilities a year ago in CEMEA, settlement volumes have increased nearly 60 times
  • June 30, 2026 – Visa today outlined a series of AI, stablecoin, and token capabilities designed to help clients across the Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa (CEMEA) region participate in the next generation of commerce. Ahead of the Visa Payments Forum, taking place in Paris on July 1, Visa shared how two foundational shifts — artificial intelligence and stablecoins — are transforming the front-end and back-end of commerce and money movement, and how Visa is enabling clients to adapt, scale and build trusted new experiences.

“Commerce is entering a new phase that is increasingly intelligent, programmable, and embedded into everyday experiences,” said Tareq Muhmood, Regional President, CEMEA, Visa. He added, “For companies serving the digital economy, the opportunity is significant, but so is the need for trust and interoperability. Visa is focused on providing the infrastructure and intelligence to innovate confidently across the front- and back-end of payments and deliver better experiences for the consumers and businesses they serve.”

Powering the Front End of Commerce with AI

Visa detailed how AI is reshaping how transactions are initiated, authorised, and trusted, while also accelerating how new commerce experiences are designed, developed and delivered. As AI agents increasingly act on behalf of consumers and businesses, Visa Intelligent Commerce, the company’s platform for agentic commerce, provides the trust and controls needed for AI agents to securely discover, initiate, and complete transactions.

To support this shift, Visa is working across the ecosystem to help ensure agent-initiated transactions are transparent and trusted. This includes merchant enablement through the newly launched Agent Score, created with New Generation, which allows merchants to evaluate their websites for agentic commerce readiness — specifically, whether AI agents can navigate, understand and complete tasks on a merchant’s website.  Merchants also need to know which agents can be trusted to transact on their sites, and agents need confidence that they are interacting with legitimate merchants. With the launch of Agentic Directory, Visa is providing a directory that includes agents and merchants that have been verified as legitimate participants in agentic commerce.

    Enhancing Tokens for AI-Driven Commerce

One of the key drivers of eCommerce growth in the CEMEA region has been the growth of tokenisation, bringing more secure, convenient and seamless payments to the region across eCommerce and mobile channels. In CEMEA, Visa has seen a rapid increase in tokenised transactions, growing from 26% in 2023 to 70% in 2026.

Today, tokens already carry a highly secure data set purpose-built for digital payments. As commerce extends to new channels and agents, Visa is enriching the data to provide more details on the transaction type, where the token is being used and who is making the payment. A second key advancement is a token assurance signal. Token use is evaluated throughout its lifecycle — based on provisioning and behavioural history — to generate a signal of trust behind each transaction

Together, these advancements help strengthen the role of tokens as a foundation for trusted digital and AI-driven commerce, giving clients richer context and stronger assurance as transactions become more automated, embedded and intelligent.

Modernising the Back End of Money Movement with Stablecoins

Visa shared progress in modernising settlement and value transfer through stablecoins and blockchain-based infrastructure. With Tokenised Deposits, the company will build the technology layer that can allow banks to turn traditional deposits into programmable, always-on digital money. This gives banks a way to match the speed and flexibility of stablecoins while keeping funds on the balance sheet.

Visa is also expanding stablecoin settlement pilots across multiple regions, blockchains and currencies. Building on its first stablecoin settlement pilots in early 2025, Visa has moved billions of dollars in stablecoins across VisaNet, with an annualised run rate of approximately $7 billion as of March 2026. With issuing banks already settling seven days a week on-chain with Visa, Visa is working to extend seven-day settlement to include acquirers, increasing flexibility and frequency across the entire ecosystem. Since the launch of stablecoins’ settlement capabilities a year ago in CEMEA, settlement volumes have increased nearly 60 times.

To enable consumers and businesses to spend stablecoin balances anywhere Visa is accepted, Visa continues to expand stablecoin-linked card programs. With more than 160 programs live or in development globally, adoption is expected to accelerate.

Leveraging AI to Turn Insights into Intelligence

To help clients respond to rising customer expectations, Visa is combining modern infrastructure with data-led capabilities that can support better decision-making across the payment journey. The company is introducing an AI-powered travel intelligence capability that helps banks anticipate customer travel needs before a transaction occurs. Launching today in CEMEA, Visa Trip Intelligence combines VisaNet intelligence with third-party data and can infer travel intent, generate personalised trip itineraries and provide activation-ready insights, enabling banks to deliver timely pre-travel support, reduce payment friction and offer more relevant benefits, services and experiences to customers while they travel.

Mercy the Influencer and Dark-Skinned Ella Share the Creator Playbook They Wish They Had Earlier /announcements/mercy-the-influencer-and-dark-skinned-ella-creator-playbook/ Wed, 01 Jul 2026 14:18:17 +0000 /?p=379694

Every successful content creator has one thing in common. They all started at zero. Zero followers. Zero brand deals. Zero comments. Zero views.

Yet, while many people see the polished videos, viral moments and brand collaborations, very few understand what it actually takes to build a personal brand from the ground up.

On the latest episode of the Youth Empowered Podcast by the Nigerian Bottling Company, digital creators Mercy the Influencer and DarkSkinned Ella pulled back the curtain on what it really means to create content online. From overcoming self-doubt and social anxiety to developing a content strategy that drives growth, the conversation offered practical lessons for anyone looking to build a presence in today’s digital economy.

    Everyone starts at zero

For both creators, the journey wasn’t as glamorous as social media often makes it seem.

Before the followers came, there were moments of uncertainty, inconsistency and questioning whether content creation was even worth pursuing.

“I kept trying. I kept learning. I kept believing in myself,” DarkSkinned Ella shared while reflecting on her early days as a creator.

Mercy admitted that her own breakthrough didn’t come from chasing followers but from solving a problem she personally experienced.

After struggling with severe skin issues and feeling misled by skincare recommendations online, she decided to create honest content documenting her own experiences.

“I wasn’t thinking about followers,” she explained. “I just wanted to tell the truth.”

Ironically, that authenticity became the turning point for her brand.

Consistency isn’t just posting every day

One of the biggest myths the guests challenged was the idea that consistency simply means posting more.

According to Mercy, consistency is about creating a schedule you can realistically maintain.

“The starter pack to grow your page is six pieces of content every week,” she explained.

Whether that’s one post every day or two posts a day across three days, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s building a rhythm your audience can rely on.

    Every creator needs a strategy

Perhaps one of the most practical moments of the episode came when Mercy introduced a simple framework aspiring creators can use to structure their content.

She explained that every content strategy should include three types of content:

    • Growth content to attract new audiences through educational posts, tutorials, tips, and insights
    • Community-building content that helps audiences connect with the person behind the brand
    • Conversion content that encourages audiences to take action, whether that’s making a purchase, joining a community or engaging more deeply

Rather than posting randomly, she encouraged creators to intentionally balance these content types to build both visibility and long-term engagement.

    Authenticity beats imitation

The conversation also challenged one of social media’s biggest traps: comparison.

While many creators try to replicate someone else’s style, both guests agreed that audiences respond best to authenticity.

“If I vlog like somebody else,” Mercy explained, “people won’t see me—they’ll see the other person.”

Instead of chasing trends that don’t fit, they encouraged aspiring creators to identify the kind of content they genuinely enjoy making and build from there.

Because when content feels forced, audiences can usually tell.

    Stop waiting to be perfect

One of the most memorable moments of the conversation came when the discussion turned to fear.

Fear of looking awkward. Fear of being judged. Fear of creating something that nobody watches.

For Mercy, embracing that discomfort became part of the journey.

“I celebrated 1,000 posts,” she said. “That was 1,000 times of sounding cringe.”

She recalled setting up photo shoots outdoors because she couldn’t afford proper lighting, with passersby staring at what looked like an unusual setup. The content later generated paid opportunities that made every uncomfortable moment worthwhile.

Darkskinned Ella shared a similar perspective.

“If you want to be a good content creator, forget shame,” she said. “Do it shamelessly.”

    More than content creation

Beyond algorithms, followers, and brand deals, the episode explored something much bigger: believing in yourself before anyone else does.

Both creators agreed that growth doesn’t happen overnight, and comparing your journey to someone else’s only distracts you from your own progress.

Instead, they encouraged young Nigerians to start where they are, keep learning, and remain consistent—even when the results aren’t immediate.

As host Moses Dickson reminded listeners at the end of the episode, “The challenge isn’t to have everything figured out. It’s simply to take the first visible step.”

Whether that’s posting your first video, pitching your first client, launching your first idea or making your first sale.

Because every success story begins in the same place.

    Zero.

Stakeholders have called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, financial institutions and the private sector to unlock the growth potential of Nigeria’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The maiden edition of the forum brought together entrepreneurs, policymakers, regulators, development partners and business leaders to discuss practical solutions to the challenges confronting MSMEs. Speakers identified access to finance, business formalisation, digital transformation, capacity building and strategic partnerships as critical enablers of sustainable enterprise growth.

The call was made at LAPO SME Connect 1.0, organised by LAPO Microfinance Bank in collaboration with the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria (ASBON) and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) to commemorate the 2026 World MSME Day.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAPO Microfinance Bank, Cynthia Ikponmwosa said sustainable MSME growth requires more than financing, stressing the need for capacity building, business advisory services and strategic partnerships.

She said, “At LAPO Microfinance Bank, we recognise that access to finance alone is not enough. Entrepreneurs need the right knowledge, skills, networks and opportunities to build resilient businesses. Through initiatives like SME Connect, we are creating platforms that empower MSMEs to thrive, create jobs and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s economic development.

In his keynote address, Dr. Olufemi Egbesola, National President of ASBON, called for stronger partnerships among government, financial institutions and the private sector to create an enabling environment for small businesses through supportive policies, access to finance and enterprise development programmes.

Representing SMEDAN, Tosin Abajo said collaboration is essential to enterprise growth, noting that entrepreneurs require business development support, formalisation, digital skills, market access and continuous capacity building in addition to finance.

“At SMEDAN, we remain committed to working with stakeholders to create an enabling environment where MSMEs can grow, innovate and contribute meaningfully to national development,” he said.

The event featured panel discussions on business formalisation, access to finance, digital transformation and business sustainability, alongside an exhibition that enabled entrepreneurs to showcase their products, network and access business advisory support.

LAPO Microfinance Bank said SME Connect is part of its commitment to deepening financial inclusion and supporting Nigeria’s MSMEs through innovative financial solutions, strategic partnerships and enterprise development initiatives.

Nothing says “I have my life together” like house plants. Real plants require commitment, watering, and sunlight—things that NEPA and your 9-to-5 will actively try to sabotage.

The hack? Fake plants. They give you all the psychological benefits of nature without the tragic guilt of killing a living thing. Throw a on your work desk or windowsill. If you want to go a step further, draping an across your bedroom wall or mirror instantly adds that soft, aesthetic Pinterest look for less than the price of a standard delivery meal.

    2. Hide That Terrible Landlord Floor

Unless you paid an arm and a leg for a serviced luxury apartment, there is a 70% chance your apartment came with those uninspired tiles that somehow always look dirty, or terrazzo from 1994.

Instead of doing an entire floor renovation (in this economy?), just cover it up. Placing a plush in your living room or next to your bed changes the entire vibe. Suddenly, you aren’t stepping onto bare tiles; you’re stepping onto comfort.

For your kitchen, don’t let grease ruin your mood—an handles the mess while making the space look cohesive.

    3. Wall Clocks That Double as Art

Let’s face it, nobody actually checks a wall clock to know the time anymore—that’s what your phone is for. Wall clocks in modern homes are strictly for vibes and filling up awkward, empty wall space.

Instead of buying expensive paintings that you’ll look at and start calculating how many plates of food it could have bought, go for a . You stick it directly onto the wall yourself, it takes up a massive amount of visual real estate, and it looks incredibly modern and expensive. It’s the ultimate illusion of wealth.

    4. Curtains That Block Out Your Problems (And NEPA Flashlights)

The fastest way to make a room look small, hot, and sad is using thin, transparent curtains that let your neighbors see what you’re cooking. You need thickness. You need drama.

Upgrading to a sleek does two things: it instantly frames your windows to look larger, and it ensures that when you want to sleep away your sorrows during a weekend afternoon, the harsh Nigerian sun stays firmly outside.

Pro Tip: When decorating on a tight budget, pick one focal point per room. Don’t try to buy everything at once. Start with a rug, see how the room changes, then add the walls. Your account balance will thank you.
